Dr Manoj Gupta is a
former Indian Navy submarine commander with 22 years of naval service. He
completed five operational deployments including one in command of a Kilo class
submarine to personally clock over 10,000 dived hours during his submarine
career. He has a Masters in Defence and Strategic Studies and a Masters in
Exclusive Economic Zone Management. In 2000, he was appointed Director of the
Ocean Management Division in the Directorate of Naval Operations for 4 years
before being appointed Director Net Assessment and Defence Attaché to the Chief
of Integrated Defence Staff. He has held the prestigious position of the
‘Admiral RD Katari Chair’ at the United Services Institute in India and was
visiting fellow at the Centre for Strategic and International Studies in
Indonesia.
He has lectured widely
on maritime security including, at the Indian Defence Staff College, Royal
Australian Navy College and the Australian Command and Staff College. He has
numerous publications on maritime issues including two books on management of
maritime affairs in India and maritime regimes for regional cooperation in the
Indian Ocean region.
